From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

Quote
The number of people using train services in South Gloucestershire has risen over the last two years.

Severnside Community Rail Partnership figures found numbers had increased from 135 to 201, or by 49%, at Severn Beach station between 2009 and 2011.

The same weekday passenger count also found increases of 12% at Filton Abbey Wood, a jump of 26% at Patchway, and a 5% increase at Yate.

The partnership, formed in 2004, aims to encourage the use of local trains.

It covers the network of routes radiating from Bristol, bounded by Gloucester, Bath/Freshford, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton, and the Severn Estuary - including the branch line to Severn Beach.

The figures for Filton Abbey Wood show an increase from 3,102 to 3,461; Patchway has seen its usage increase from 234 up to 295, and there has been an increase at Yate from 931 up to 974.

The figures are provided in the Severnside Community Rail Partnership's January 2012 Progress Report, available on their website.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

5% increase at Yate in two years?  Shocked

I think the figure is more like 50%!

Crowded trains mean conductors cannot check or sell tickets. If you board and alight en-masse at an open station you probably won't ever have to buy a ticket and so won't ever be counted in the figures. Yate commuters will know exactly who I'm pointing the finger at.  Roll Eyes

The number of passengers using Yate station is far more than the number buying tickets.

All good news.  Just a shame that passenger number dropped considerably at Redland.  I can't really think of any reason why this may have happened, especially with ticket issuing facilities now available on the platform.

Well, you moved away from the area for a start, so that's -1.  Tongue Wink Grin

Goodness knows how much rail traffic would have increased North of Gloucester to Worcester if FGW (First Great Western)/LM (London Midland - recent franchise) hadn't completely bungled the timetable up! Angry

Still, good news...

Probably not a significant amount, they did "AXE" (Btline, 2010) the trains after all  Tongue
