BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE APPEAL FOR WITNESSES TO INCIDENT ON TRAIN - DEVON

Plymouth-based British Transport Police (BTP▸ (British Transport Police)) officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed an altercation on board a train in Devon to come forward and assist the investigation.

PC Mike Phillips said a disturbance took place on First Great Western^s 1556hrs Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on Monday 14 November 2011.

^The altercation happened at around 4.30pm after the train had departed Newton Abbot station and was heading towards Torre,^ PC Phillips said.

^Two people intervened in a dispute between passengers and were assaulted. Police were called and a 43-year-old man was subsequently arrested and released on bail until 4 January 2012 pending further enquiries.

^I would now like to hear from anyone who was on the train who witnessed what occurred. If you saw what happened and have any information which you think could be of interest to police, then I would ask you to please get in touch as soon as possible.^

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number 414 of 14/11/2011, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
