Avoncliff?
Probably Avoncliff, since I think Freshford is over the border in NE Somerset.
Talking of Somerset, Melksham has an infinitely better train service than the borough of Norton Radstock, a conurbation of similar size!
Spot on , vacman and BandHcommuter.
In the 2001 census , Melksham was marked down as having 21000 inhabitants , while Avoncliff is described as having "27 homes (3 of which are actually in the parish of Winsley), several boat homes and a public house."
From December 2007 , 44 weekday trains (a rise of 4) are scheduled to call at Avoncliff station , while just 4 weekday trains (a rise of 0) are scheduled to call at Melksham.
On the Norton Radstock issue , the possibility of achieving a single return journey between Radstock and Swindon via Westbury , Trowbridge , Melksham and Chippenham was looked at , but effectively sunk by a pessimistic assessment by the consultancy firm Atkins (link below.)
