Wasn't on my usual commute last night- was instead travelling out to Farnborough North via Reading. Got the (Swansea) 17:15 from Paddington, and came to a very sudden halt just outside Southall. The TM(resolve) told us there was a points failure, we sat there for about 15 minutes, then went hell-for-leather out to Reading, arriving about 12 minutes late. Still managed to get the 18:04 out to Farnborough. However the boards at Reading were showing everything else as being "delayed", and announcements were saying that the next westbound train (Hereford) was still at a stand at Southall. A lucky escape I think.

A lucky escape for me too on the 17:06 (Westbury), likewise it came to a very sudden halt just to the west of Southall (sudden enough to cause a wheelflat on the coach I was in Sad) but the train had barely stopped when it restarted.

17:03 Paddington - Penzance had a bit of a problem, and got into Penzance just 359 minutes late. So it arrived at 04:29 instead of 22:30!

The WNXX (Stored Unserviceable, Mainline Locos HQ All Classes) forum has the journey log of the service, it left Castle Cary at 18:32 and didn't pass Cogload Jct until 00:49!  Shocked

But on the bright side it made up 8 minutes between Tiverton and Penzance.  Wink

Wonder if there was a scheduled crew change for that service - could have been interesting considering they usually happen around Taunton or Exeter!

As I read it (but I'm a layman, so I may have it wrong)

17:03 has a problem between Castle Cary and Taunton - took six hours between the two.  That was the only significant delay

19:03 left Paddington quarter of an hour late, but was the best part of an hour down by Slough.  It remained about that late to Westbury, from where it was diverted via Bath and Bristol, regaining its route at Taunton but by then it was at hour and 40 minutes late (although, by now, ahead of the 17:03).  A further 80 minutes of delay was added between Plymouth and Devonport - making it about 3 hours late the rest of the way to Penzance, and just an hour ahead of the 17:03

There does appear to be some sort of reporting error from Saltash on the 19:03 ...

Wonder if there was a scheduled crew change for that service - could have been interesting considering they usually happen around Taunton or Exeter!

The Exeter 18:00 spare train manager dutifully volunteered his services to allow 1C89 to proceed to Penzance around 6 hour late. There were 150 people for Cornwall on board at that point.

Issues with the air compressors on both ends of 1C89 apparently. It came to a halt in the Castle Cary area after the low main air protection dumped the air train pipe causing an emergency brake application.

Any idea what happened between Plymouth and Devonport?
