Expenses revealed for Gloucestershire MPs

Lib Dem MP for Cheltenham Martin Horwood claimed a total of ^19,724.85 in 2008/09 on the second home allowance.

His receipts included 50p for a banana, and a packet of Jaffa Cakes priced at ^1.85 from on board a First Great Western Train.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

As a bit of a Lib Dem fan I'm seriously disappointed to read this! I can only imagine the look I'd get from my boss if I tried to claim expenses for Jaffa Cakes and a banana bought from a train buffet when on my way to a meeting  Wink

Probably the same as HMRC did when they reviewed my expense claims for tax purposes

I won in the end

I thought bananas were complementary in first class (and not sure they are sold in standard class). So how does that work then?

Or am I wrong?

Jafa cakes are not free anywhere (horrid things anyway)

Reasonable and wholly valid claim imo.

You really cannot understand what FGW (First Great Western) are doing wrong, enticing first class customer's with complementary banana's and
 jaffa cakes.

Wonder if they got any of the mince pies left from a few years back ?

"yes, we have no bananas!"

It appears from the submitted receipt for said banana that it was purchased at a Select Service Partners outlet, so most likely bought on a station and not on a train. Mr Horwood MP (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) has also submitted receipts for coffees purchased from the Pumpkin cafe on Cheltenham Spa station and other food and drink items from various SSP outlets. I note from these receipts that he is not getting best value for the taxpayer as he doesn't use a BITE card!
