BAM Nuttall wins ^8.5m Reading Station deal

BAM Nuttall has been awarded an ^8.5m contract by Network Rail to provide the start of the civils works associated with the redevelopment of Reading Station.

The project involves the widening, by about 10m, of both main road thoroughfares in Reading town centre under the railway.

Bam Nuttall will also have to remove some of the existing decks, widen abutments and install a new orthotropic bridge deck on Caversham Road Bridge.

Work will also include the strengthening of the existing Southern Tunnel, a 120m long 70 degree skew bridge under the railway. Design development of this work is currently underway.

Work on site starts in February 2010 after a design period and is scheduled for completion in March 2011.

The bulk of the bridge related work is carried out in major possessions around the Christmas and New Year 2010 / 2011 period. Earthwork retaining structures and abutment widenings will be carried out in normal working hours.

I didn't realise both road bridges were being widened as part of the upgrade!

They are being widened wrt the railway, not the road.  Ie, so they can take more tracks not extra lanes of traffic.

Depends which bridges at Reading you are talking about. The Cow Lane underpasses through the railway triangle area west of the station will be widened under the tracks to allow two-lane traffic, plus a cycle lane and pavement for pedestrians, which should provide some kind of relief for the Caversham Road route.

Looks like it is definitely the bridges at Caversham Rd (mentioned in the text) and Vastern Rd (photo caption) - but I've emailed the chap to confirm exactly what is involved - I believe it is widening the rail deck to allow for more tracks in both cases.

I think the works at Reading will have been packaged, the two main bridges either side of the station being the crucial first stage possibly to allow the relief line platforms to move north give space for the construction of the fly under or over can be built between the main and relief lines.  Cow Lane area will be done I suspect at a later stage.

Guess work on my part as I don't know what the staged works details are

Will some part of the ^8.5 million be used to put back the old picture of a 125 going across the bridge that used to adorn the side?
