The lights on the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol were switched off on the 150th anniversary of the death of the engineer who designed it.

As a mark of respect for the Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdon Brunel, illuminations on the steam ship, the SS Great Britain, were also turned off.

The tributes to Brunel, lasting 15 minutes each, took place at 2000 BST.

The latest bridge lights were installed in 2006 and include fluorescent tubes and more than 3,000 one-watt LEDs.

Isambard Kingdom Brunel died at the age of 53 in 1859 - before the completion of the bridge in 1864. He is buried in the Brunel family grave at Kensal Green in London.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.
