From the FGW (First Great Western) website.

Anyone aware of the reason for the engineering work?

The service provided will actually be worse.  There is just one bus a day on the Monday to Friday, at 05:20 (yes, Twenty past five in the morning) Swindon to Westbury ... and another bus just from Chippenham to Westbury at 18:30.    Services from Westbury leave at 06:53 and 19:50, again just to Chippenham.  So three out of four journeys that are usually through ones will involve a change; there are no extras, as far as I can make out.

The buses are allowed 53 minutes between Chippenham and Westbury, as compared to the train taking 25. So that's all journey times doubled.

I spoke with Sonia at National rail on behalf of the large number proportion of cycle users in the Melksham traffic.  She tells me that there are no alternative arrangements for taking cycles, and that as "it's only 20 minutes on the bus to Chippenham, so not very far. You should cycle to Chippenham station".

Perhaps you should invite Sonia to cycle along the A350 with you!

Are you sure it was Sonia, not Sanjay in Mumbai ! - they don't seem to have much idea of the local geography !
