Reston village set for new rail station for the first time in 50 years

For the first time in more than half a century, a train station is set to open in the Scottish Borders village of Reston.

The Scottish Borders Council’s planning committee has accepted proposals for the station.

The plans include two new 270m long, 4m wide station platforms, waiting shelters, seating and ticket machines. The embankment would be widened to accommodate the platforms.

A new footbridge is also included that will cross the railway, incorporating lift shafts and stairs on either side. The north lift shaft would reach a height of around 17m and would serve three levels, the interchange, the north platform and the bridge crossing.

Reston will be a stop for local trains on the ECML^▸ (East Coast Main Line) to serve a village of 350 souls. It will presumably also act as a railhead for Eyemouth and Coldingham, which will increase its catchment to perhaps 5000 within a 6km radius.

Interesting to compare this with Pilning, where the station already exists and is within 6km of Almondsbury, Olveston, Tockington, Littleton, Aust, Pilning, Severn Beach and a significant chunk of North Bristol!

Just imagine if Wales followed suit - It wouldnt just be Pilning International to Prague, but to Port Talbot Parkway, Penarth...Oh the romance!

With a change of gauge too? A rebirth of Brunel's broad gauge in England or a switch to narrow gauge in Scotland...

Scottish Borders Council pushed hard for the station, and I believe helps subsidise it. It is daft that there's no Scotrail service to Berwick but it's equally daft that Manchester-based Transpennine Express does run one. This is what you get when you fragment the railway system. And refuse to invest in the likes of passing loops which would solve the capacity issue.

I use Reston when coming by train to Edinburgh but prices to Newcastle are a lot higher than from Berwick. Ridiculous that Scotrail does not run to Reston and Berwick. Comment saying that we need passing loops is spot on. Reston was meant to do for the Eastern Borders what Borders railway does for the central borders - enable commuters to use the train rather than cars to get to Edinburgh but there is a smaller population base to draw on and prices are too high. Great car park mind you. David Byrne

Yes - just published - I checked. I thought the newest were Cameron Bridge and Leven, and I would be amazed if the passenger numbers were below Scotscalder, Beasdale, IBM or Lochluichart.  And having found the headline wanting, I wonder if the article is.

But with "like" on each of the above comments, it points to a station without the reliable right service and shows how important that element is.
