Is this a sign of the future? Cheaper to run a bus than go through the business of closing a line.

Maybe and I think there's some of this in France. Not new in the UK^▸ ; I recall Ealing Broadway to Clapham, and Stafford to Stoke-on-Trent local services but don't think they run any more.
