"What are the railways for" ... interesting that "On this day" has come up with the authorisation of the East Cornwall Mineral Railway ( https://saltash.org/onewebmedia/Broad%20Gauge%20to%20Calstoc1.pdf ) and that's what many of the original railways were for ... freight / heavy haul.  That still remains a major traffic at times, with freight trains getting in the way of scheduled passenger services.   Witness - cancelled train yesterday due to "congestion" at even the most unlikely of places.

No, I think it's actually looking south from the middle of Ebury Bridge towards Grosvenor Bridge (you can see the railings beyond the tracks in the background).

And "What are the railways for?" - a source of picture quizzes, that's what!
