I recall many years ago catching a Sheffield to Huddersfield train via Penistone, and reversing in the 'burbs of Sheffield to go up the old line towards Woodhead, after Sheffield Victoria and Woodhead Tunnel had closed.    To this day, most Liskeard to Looe trains reverse at Coombe Junction itself rather than up at the station there.   Are there any other current, or past , examples in regular service?

Middlesborough to Whitby at Battersby ?

It may have just been a temporary arrangement, but back in May 2021, I am sure our Middlesborough to Whitby service did not call at Battersby station, but reversed at the junction ouside the station.

There used to be a regular CrossCountry service from Reading that reversed at Foxhall Junction and took Didcot West Curve onward to Oxford.

Reversals just beyond Y-shaped stations on diversions e.g. Virginia Water, Lewes.

Unplanned occasions e.g. reversal needed when when using 2 sides of Landore triangle to reverse a set with cab issue or avoid a points failure - very occasionally happens in service. I think the same was needed on a planned basis in the past at Inverness when 'through' services were scheduled.

On a similar note, reversals at unadvertised stations on diversions e.g. Banbury. (ISTR (I seem to recall/remember) XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) at Newport in the past?)

Inverness - definitely. I've travelled on an arriving service (late afternoon) from Kyle of Lochalsh that reversed outside the station - it's next trip was to Aberdeen and you can't get there from the north-facing platforms.

Still exists ‘on demand’ I believe, should a driver require a refresh. Last northbound of the day still, although that is now an hour earlier post pandemic.

Thanks folks - Inverness and Foxhall Junction are good, current, fairly regular examples.  Other daily examples at Killarney and Limerick Junction.  And on the "far too often" list is Bathampton ...

Temporary, but during about a 6 week period of a major embankment failure near Botley, all SWT (South West Trains) services between Portsmouth and Waterloo via Eastleigh reversed on the main lines between St Denys and Mount Pleasant level crossing.
