A North Yorkshire man who caused problems at a railway station today has a criminal record after he was prosecuted under a 162-year-old law.

Lewis Connors, 25, also has a £585 court bill.

York Magistrates Court heard he refused to leave a train when told to do so at Peterborough Railway Station.

His actions disrupted the operation of the railway, the court was told.

Connors, of Steeton near Tadcaster, was prosecuted under the Malicious Damage Act 1861.

How many of the members here even know of this law ... or what it says?

To be fair, how many members are aware of all the new legislastion passing through? That law could hazve been passed last week & we’d not have known about it necessarily

Interestingly this has appeared in today’s court reports in the Swindon Advertiser. Same station, same day.

You can read about the remaining parts of the act at https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/24-25/97/contents

Without more detail, my money is on section 36

Obstructing engines or carriages on railways.
Whosoever, by any unlawful act, or by any wilful omission or neglect, shall obstruct or cause to be obstructed any engine or carriage using any railway, or shall aid or assist therein, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and being convicted thereof shall be liable, at the discretion of the court, to be imprisoned for any term not exceeding two years,"

Section 35 is also interesting as it carries the penalty of life imprisonment for tampering with the railway.
