An IBA engineer once told me that an aerial in the loft loses six sevenths of the signal through the roof tiles.

I suppose it only becomes an issue the further you get "downwind" from one of these brutes

Ah, you could be right. I forget whether I was talking to him about reception from Crystal Palace (17 miles away) or trying to pick up Southern TV^▸ (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) from Hannington (36 miles away). It was a long time ago. No IBA or Southern TV any more.

Remarkably difficult things to identify from vertical aerial photography. I have been trying to identify one next to the line from Godalming to Guildford. Not on OS^▸ (Ordnance Survey) maps and virtually invisible on aerial photography (and StreetView isn't in focus enough to read the signs on the gate), obviously have to be investigated on the bike.

Well, it depends what "next to" means, but ... that TV^▸ (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) mast is over a mile from the railway at its closest point, at which point the railway is inside both Guildford and a tunnel. So I'd guess not!

Also remarkably difficult to spot from a light aircraft. Fortunately, there are relatively few and they are marked on the charts, but they are tall and slender, with little to see in some lighting conditions. The diagonal cables are all but invisible, and there are frequent warnings throughout the textbooks. You can't even count on sympathy if you black out a million TV^▸ (Thames Valley, or TeleVision, depending on context) sets at a crucial moment in Eastenders.
