A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard. It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc. A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

One of the more polite remarks made by a Manchester airport victim was "Heathrow levels of incompetence" Of course if the railways were better run, there would be less demand for air travel and the airports might cope better.

If the railways were better run, there would still be high demand for air travel, but higher usage of trains to get to the airport. The average person does not go to Spain or Greece by train.

The air travel was more than decimated during the pandemic lockdowns.
It should not be surprising the airports and airlines are struggling more than they did pre-pandemic, airlines and airports and their contractors made staff redundant, other staff that were furloughed have not returned to the industry. It has been difficult for the industry to recruit with confidence until recently, quite a few of the key jobs take time to recruit due to the security checks and then there is the training.

As ET says, this should come as no surprise. We need to show a little patience and understanding with all modes of public transport at the moment.

Apart, possibly towards P&O. Again, not those on the shop floor. Management are to blame.

EasyJet are cancelling around 100 flights a day at the moment due to Covid staff shortages. Not sure how many are scheduled to run, but that must be a fairly hefty percentage?

"Manchester airport boss resigns" According to news reports. It has also been suggested that police and fire brigade staff could be drafted in to help deal with the delays which are expected to worsen with Easter. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-61002096
