It looks as though the exhaust steam from the engine is going in one direction whilst the smoke is going in the other direction.
Cant think what conditions would cause that.
Possibly photoshopped ?

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

For what purpose ?  I would suggest that as the "smoke" has a slight blue tinge to it (wood smoke ??), it is more like to emanate from the field behind the railway embankment rather than from the locomotive - which would be producing grey/black smoke. A slight breeze from R to L coupled with the train traveling at a higher speed than the breeze would produce just that effect.

I suspect that you are correct, it just looked a bit odd/photoshopped, but as you point out "for what purpose"

There is somewhere a photoshoped image of ME carrying an asault rifle and wearing a slightly too tight military uniform, adorned with an improbable number of medals. The caption reads

"BROADGAGE FOR EL▸ (Elizabeth Line - Transport for London line from Reading and Heathrow in the west through central tunnels across to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.) PRESIDENTE"

The background includes banana trees, military vehicles, and oil wells. I do not in fact wish to be president of a banana republic.
