Why tongue-in-cheek? Isn't the crew member shown in this photo exposed to very similar hazards to those which led to recent deaths?

Similar hazards but with greater training/awareness? Also, probably not quite the same hazards thanks to lower speed (aren't heritage lines generally restricted to 25mph? Someone told me this but might not be correct). Perhaps an additional hazard of ash though!

Departing from our platforms, the crew member on the platform side - driver or fireman/secondman - must look backwards down the train looking for signals to stop or other signs of distress. The opposite crew member is looking forward until the train is clear of the platform. Looking back is not possible without sticking one's head out.

Presumably that's why locomotives in some places have mirrors. (Not saying mirrors should be fitted to old steam engines, just a personal 'aha' moment.)
