Cross Country seem to have caught the GWR (Great Western Railway) problem. Over the last couple of days there have been significant short formations.

SHORT FORMATION: We are sorry but the 09:00 Glasgow Central to Penzance service is formed of 4 coaches instead of 8 today. Coaches G, I, J and L are not available. If you have a reservation and end up standing as a result....

Penzance to Dundee would be a record stand!!

With loads of parked-up HSTs (High Speed Train), why are we seeing so many short formations?

Because privatisation caused the ownership of the trains to be separated from the train operators. I would therefore assume that Cross Country would have to first have to agree a contract with the train owner and then have another discussion with the Dft over changes to the franchise contract and then probably a third discussion with Network Rail about access charges (so another contract). So why bother.

In this instance privatisation has been good for lawyers and rent extractors, but not passengers.
