It's very very rare these days for something to pop up that makes me ask new questions about our board structure - and results in a lightbulb moment.  One of those rare occasions this morning - a post from BigNoseMac about changes to Flickr accounts in two months time and the question "where does THAT go"?

News, Help and Assistance has had the subtext "News about this site, and an area where you can ask for help on how to use it" previously ... I have amended that to "News about this site, and an area where you can ask for help on how to use it and other online sites" . The area (in which I'm posting this) is / has really become the ground for meta-discussions - in other words discussions about the mechanisms and structure of how we post and use the forum, and the additional four words are a pointer to / admission of that.

I have also added the word rail to the subtext of Across the West. That is such a vigorous area with GWR (Great Western Railway) and general train posts on this part of the network, and I fear that covering meta-topics there too risks those meta-topics being lost between the tracks.

I had the internal debate about where to put the Flickr topic. Glad to see that I wasn't alone.

Certain 'general' boards (Frequent Posters, And Also) were considered but quickly dismissed because they aren't fully public and won't show in search results. The pre-change 'News, Help...' board was considered too, but that was, until today's change, inward looking. So I plumped for 'Across the West', because its a board that covers all rail topics. I'd be informing mostly rail enthusiast folk who may have much of their library of rail related photos and media on Flickr.

An imperfect choice, which has now been made more perfect. Thanks for the board 'pointer' updates grahame. Top work.

Which reminds me. There's some slightly old Photobucket news that should be brought to the forum. Now, Where's that topic? (Rhetorical)  Wink

You can find out more about how this forum works [here] - that will link you to a copy of the forum agreement that you can read before you join, and tell you very much more about how we operate. We are an independent forum, provided and run by customers of Great Western Railway, for customers of Great Western Railway and we welcome railway professionals as members too, in either a personal or official capacity. Views expressed in posts are not necessarily the views of the operators of the forum.

As well as posting messages onto existing threads, and starting new subjects, members can communicate with each other through personal messages if they wish. And once members have made a certain number of posts, they will automatically be admitted to the "frequent posters club", where subjects not-for-public-domain are discussed; anything from the occasional rant to meetups we may be having ...
