I was on that 'earlier broken down train'. It was the 0929 to BTM▸ - a two car 143. It turned up 10 mins late, we all got on ... and stayed there. Apparently, the brakes were jamming earlier in the journey, but at Nailsea the crew found they could have released them and kept going, provided our speed didn't drop below 45mph (from what we overheard?). The crew asked for permission to go non-stop to BTM (missing out Parson Street and Bedminster) but control said 'No'. Instead, a relief train had to be sent 'down the up' from Parson Street, to tow us in. This apparently necessitated the driver of our train walking up the track to place detonators on the rail in front of us - even though it was broad daylight, excellent visibility and the rescue train knew exactly where we were! (By the way, those detonators are quite impressive: clouds of powder smoke as the relief train went over them!) We eventually got to BTM at about 1100. Fair play to our crew, though: they kept us informed, and helped anyone who wanted information about missed connections - when's the next train to Cheltenham for the racing?, etc.

William Huskisson MP▸ was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830. Many more have died in the same way since then. Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.
"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner." Discuss.

Chris .. in simplyfied terms the rulebook clearly states that if the line is Blocked with a Failed Train, detonators must be placed at specified intervals to provide protection for the failed train. in the direction with which the assisting train will arrive, The person laying the protection normally the driver will meet the rescue train at an agreed location and conduct the train through the protection zone setting off the detonators and proceeding to the failed train.

Thanks for that useful information, dog box! It still looked a bit like the wild west, with all that powder smoke blowing about!

Gosh, how exciting. I've only experienced detonators a couple of times (once when my train was rescuing a failed train ahead and once on the Epping -Ongar line last train, and yes they are impressive.) I caught the 0752 this morning, all in the name of research re loadings for Lee, and it was a Cl 143 on one engine and no carriage lights. Thought that was excitement enough for Nailsea, but looks like I should have hung around for a couple of hours!
