On a recent trip to London I noticed TfL» (Transport for London - about) charge 30p to use their public toilets, however the turnstiles only accept 20p, 50p, & ^1 coins with signs suggesting no change is given.

Now how exactly does one pay the exact 30p fare to use the toilet? Admittedly they were Free for me as on this occasion I was accompanied by a child under 5 but still got me thinking how much additional revenue the configuration early TfL, and what a genius money making scheme installing barriers that doesn't give change and only accept denominations of coins which means an overpayment every time.

Er, doesn't that poster say that change machines (as opposed to turnstiles) accept 20p, 50p and ^1 coins? That implies that you will get 10p coins back as part of your change that you can then use in the turnstiles.

the specific turnstile I used also said it only accepted those coins. I didn't see any change machines.

Yes you're right it's the change machines.

The turnstiles at Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central are both 30p, if you overpay then it keeps 10p in credit so the following person only has to pay 20p.

Could lead to some, erm, interesting conversations in the gents: Look, mate, about that 10p you owe me...
