First Great Western announced delays to its service from Reading to Newbury and Basingstoke after a person was hit by a train.

A person has been hit by a train near Reading West.

First Great Western announced on its Twitter account it had suspended services on Thursday evening running from Reading to Newbury or Basingstoke after the incident.

The announcement was posted at around 7.45pm on Thursday. At 9.20pm it announced services from Newbury and Basingstoke can now run into Reading. However the line from Reading out to both places was still blocked.

At 10.40pm delays were clearing and both lines fully re-opened. But buses are operating between Reading and Bedwyn due to engineering works.

Delays of up to an hour occurred during Wednesday evening.

British Transport Police said a 19-year-old man had died after the incident but his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Tickets were accepted by South West Trains between Basingstoke and Reading via Woking and Guildford.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post (a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London), depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
