Not a picture quiz, but can you guess my journey, the stations where I changed trains, and the train companies used, from the following list of rolling stock classes? It was one very long round trip. I'll start you off with my origin.

1. Shirehampton Class 158
2. ? Class 43
3. ?  S7 Stock
4. ?  S7 Stock
5. ? Class 180
6. ? Class 91
7. ? Class 158
8. ? Class 221
9. ? Class 170
(9a. A walk between two stations)
10 ? Class 90
(10a. Another short walk)
11 ? S7 Stock
12 ? 1972 Stock
13 ? Class 43
14 ? Class 150

Well I'll have a stab at it with:
1. Shirehampton
2. Bristol Temple Meads
3. London Paddington
4. Edgware Road
5. Kings Cross St.Pancras
6. York
7. Edinburgh
8. Dundee
9. Aberdeen
9a. Glasgow (Queen Street)
10. Glasgow (Central)
10a. London Euston
11. Euston Square
12. Baker Street
13. Paddington
14. Bristol Temple Meads
To finish back at Shirehampton

Am I even close? It sounds like a good trip, with the exception of the problems at Reading on Wednesday morning maybe?

Are we allowed to know how long this trip took? I guessed the same first and last five stations, but assumed the trip was done in a day, which led me to guess that one of the walks was between stations in Birmingham.

Aha, brooklea appears with an answer to a forum quiz.  Grin

He was right as far as part 5. After that it all went wrong! But back on course later.   Grin

1. Shirehampton Class 158
2. Bristol Temple Meads Class 43
3. London Paddington (Paddington according to TFL (Transport for London)) S7 Stock
4. Edgware Road S7 Stock
5. Kings Cross St.Pancras Class 180

...back on course from 9a onward.

9a. Glasgow Queen Street (walk)
10. Glasgow Central Class 90
10a. London Euston  (walk)
11. Euston Square S7 Stock
12. Baker St 1972 Stock
13. London Paddington Class 43
14. Bristol Temple Meads Class 150 (back to Shirehampton)

In answer to Puffing Billy, the outward journey and the start of the return journey were completed in one calendar day. Total journey time from Shirehampton to Shirehampton was somewhere in the region of 25 hours if you include the delay I experienced (mentioned elsewhere on the forum) at Reading.

Once the gap in brooklea's admirable attempt at an answer is filled in, I'll post the full details of the trains taken.

Also the OP (Original Poster / topic starter, or Off Peak, depending on context) asked for the train companies that were used.  Feel free to add in those as well...

Let's see if I can do something towards it.

1. FGW (First Great Western)
2. FGW
3&4 London Underground
5.Now it gets interesting because from KGX both Grand Central and First Hull Trains operate 180s, but let's go with the latter and perhaps at Doncaster you changed into
6 East Coast
7 Northern Trains
8 CrossCountry
9 Scotrail (from Edinburgh?)
10 Scotrail Caledonian Sleeper
Back to the easy bits
11&12 London Underground
13&14 FGW

I am stumped on the bit in the middle as to the exact stations.

trainer,

You're getting there...

5. London Kings Cross, Class 180, First Hull Trains
6. Doncaster, Class 91, East Coast
7. Leeds, Class 158, Northern Trains
8. Wrong.
9. Edinburgh, Class 170, ScotRail

9a. onward is correct

That's pretty much answered my round trip apart from part 8. Have a think about a Class 158 from Leeds leading to a Class 221 into Edinburgh...

Get that and I'll post the final answer.

So did you change at Preston onto a Virgin 221 to Edinburgh?

Close. You've got the class, operator and destination right, but not where I changed.
