I notice that today's 0950 Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh terminated at Oxford due to "animals on the line" according to FGW▸ (First Great Western).  Realtimetrains says it was due to "the train striking a bird".  This also affected the 1150 return, which started from Oxford.

Train hit a pheasant, smashing the windscreen. I believe the driver is OK.

And this was also the reason we were given for the overcrowding on the 1732 Oxford to Gt Malvern service^..the 180 Adelante was replaced by a two car turbo.

Not the same train, but here's an example of just what damage a pheasant can do when it collides with a speeding Turbo in just the right place!

The outer skin was smashed and the inner skin partly smashed - enough that the driver was carefully brushing shards of glass off his lap!  Needless to say, the train was cancelled!

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament, or Mile Post - a method of measuring the railway in miles and chains from a starting point - usually London, depending on context) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: Stop, Look, Listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.
