From Western Morning News:

Quote
Impressive display of horse power at Paddington ahead of Watergate Bay polo matches

The polo ponies and their riders suprised staff at London Paddington station

It was horse power of an unexpected kind when bleary eyed commuters making their way down the platform at London^s Paddington station this morning were stunned to see two magnificent polo ponies.

The ponies and their riders, from First Great Western's professional polo team, were making an appearance ahead of the popular Polo on the Beach event at Watergate Bay in Cornwall which is staged this weekend.

Polo team players, Amy Guy and Richard Blake Thomas, greeted the travellers as they stepped off the first train service into London Paddington by First Great Western, who sponsor the event.

The horse power which will be on display at the surfing beach this weekend is set to be impressive with more polo games being staged than ever before in the event^s history.

However, equine competitors are not in the same league as the First Great Western trains which feature 2250 horse power locomotives, a power car that weighs 70 tonnes and is almost 18 metres in length and three metres wide.

The free to attend Veuve Clicquot Polo on the Beach has been designed as a unique event where surf meets turf on the sands of Watergate Bay.

Now in it^s eighth year, other activities on the beach will include welly-wanging, pop-up shops and a large scale model railway racetrack from First Great Western. This year will also see the debut of Britain^s first ever Segway polo match in the arena on Sunday July 6.

I can remember the time when the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery would take their geegee's through Paddington station, they would come down the taxi ramp from Bishops Bridge Road along platform 8 and then out onto Parade Street

You can't ride a bike or a skateboard on the platform, but a horse appears to be all right!

You may very well think that was why I posted this topic: I couldn't possibly comment.  Lips sealed

Hmm. Roll Eyes

It was apparently at a time "when bleary eyed commuters making their way down the platform at London^s Paddington station this morning were stunned to see two magnificent polo ponies." Staff, on the other hand, were apparently "suprised" at the sight.

Lax journalism, I'd suggest.  Shocked

Sorry Jo. Boys will be boys!  Kiss

"The first train service into London Paddington by First Great Western".. I will now have my pedant head on but which service might that have been? Being as trains run all night..

A fellow pedant replies...

The first weekday HST (High Speed Train) to arrive into Paddington in the morning is the 0004 arrival from Cornwall, which departs
Penzance at 1739.

The railway day begins 0430 and the first HST that departs its origin station after that time is the 0447 from Bristol Temple Meads, arriving Paddington at 0624.

The first HST arrival from the far South West, where you will find Watergate Bay, is the 0505 from Penzance, which arrives Paddington at 1002.

I would like to qualify any implied criticism of journalists - the First Great Western press release itself states:

Quote
Bleary eyed commuters were stunned to find the two equestrian beauties and polo team players, Amy Guy and Richard Blake Thomas, greet them as they stepped off the first First Great Western service in to London Paddington this morning.

 Roll Eyes
