Having made arrangements with a friend to meet up in Newbury on 21st May, I thought, oh goodee, that gives me plenty of time to sort out an online ticket purchase.  However, I have just spent a very frustrating half hour or so trying to log in to my account on FGWs (First Great Western) website.  It won't recognise my password, but even more annoying, won't even recognise the temporary password I was mailed!  Grrrrr.

So, folks, anyone out there know the cheapest way to get to Newbury (from Melksham) by train, please?  I asked this question a while back, as the FGW website told me at the time it would cost the rather extortionate sum of ^25 - odd for a return!  Someone suggested I could do the journey on a cheaper ticket, but I can't find the thread now.

By the way, re: the unrecognised passwords, I rang FGWs contact number, and got through to a chap who spoke with such a strong Asian accent I couldn't understand what he was saying.  Has FGW shipped their call centre to India?  I hope that doesn't sound racist.  It's not meant to, after all, there are some dialects in the UK (United Kingdom) that people in different areas might find difficult to comprehend.  I just think if companies are going to use areas where there is a strong local dialect, that they employ staff who can speak using pronunciation the majority of callers will be able to understand.

Don't want to make it seem silly, but did you click the activation link in the email?

Ah ... 16 pounds off peak day return, Trowbridge to Newbury
... 38.50 Super off peak period return Melksham to Newbury

The day / period border strikes again ;-)

Buy a Melksham - Trowbridge return, and a Trowbridge - Newbury.   Others may come up with a better split - that's just my first go.   And buy on the train - no need to do so online in this case.

Yes, I did!  I went back to the FGW (First Great Western) site to try my new gobbledegookish password, (that they'd just sent me!) and the system told me it wasn't recognised.

Thanks very much for that, Graham.  I can't get too excited about losing out on a few Nectar Points, bobm!

Haven't FGW (First Great Western) outsourced Customer service to SERCO.    Having an office in Mumbai is atrocious customer service.    They could bring it back to the UK (United Kingdom) if the Indians dared to ask for a pay rise.

Not quite. FirstInfo was purchased by an Indian company, Intelenet Global Services in 2010. They set up a subsidiary, Intelenet UK (United Kingdom) Ltd, which ran First's former Customer Service centres in Plymouth and Fort William. Some Customer Service function was also provided from India. Serco Group purchased Intelenet Global Services in 2011.

Much of FGW's Customer Service is still provided from the UK.
