An express train has claimed the life of an elephant as it attempted to cross the railway tracks.

The fully-grown creature was walking near the village of Mongpong in north-east India when it collided with the Siliguri-Alipurduar Express passenger train.

As visible in the heartbreaking images taken at the scene, the mammal was spread across the tracks and required a crane to lift it from its position.


Activists are calling for trains to lower their speeds through such areas which are densely populated with elephants (Picture: AP)

^The incident happened Friday morning. There is a need to further restrict the speed limit of the trains on the Siliguri-Alipurduar stretch,^ said Chief Wildlife Warden N.C.Bahuguna. ^We are discussing on lowering the speed limit to below 25 km.^

Nearly 40 elephants are believed to have been either hurt or killed on the same route over the last 10 years.

William Huskisson MP▸ (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.
