Bus removed from river after 30ft bridge fall

The bus crashed off the road in Grosmont, North Yorkshire on Saturday

A bus which crashed off a bridge in North Yorkshire and fell into the river below has now been removed, police have said.

Five people were rescued when the single decker crashed off the bridge on Barnard’s Road in Grosmont, near Whitby, at about 13:40 BST on Saturday.

Police said the driver and passengers escaped serious injury after the bus fell about 30ft (9m) and was left suspended over a shallow river.

The bus was recovered using a crane and the area was clear by 22:00 BST, but the damaged bridge remains closed.

Photos of the crash shared by Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue, external showed the bus on its side over the river.

The mountain rescue service said its members were attending an incident in Dalby Forest when they were called to the bus crash, but were later stood down as everyone had been moved to safety.

Police said structural engineers were called to inspect the bridge following the crash, and drivers and pedestrians are urged to avoid the area until further notice.
