From the Red Spotted Hanky website:
Will ticket gates retain my ticket?

No, all of the gates at stations will return your ticket to you.
Has something changed recently?  I assumed barriers were still programmed to retain the ticket when they think (rightly or wrongly) that the journey has been completed.

Some do and some don't in my experience so if I need to keep the ticket I go to the person manning the barriers to be let through.

Yes, that is my experience also.

I wanted to check before contacting RSH to let them know this page is incorrect.  Some employers (mine included) get all worked up about expense claims without the actual tickets, so someone could make an expensive mistake by following RSH's advice.
