This should be an easy one...
Swansea to Cardiff valid via the Vale?

Qjump, the last conductor I asked, and reason (most conductors will be reasonable and accept an Any Permitted ticket on a 'reasonable' route rather than waste time checking) say yes.

To take the formal approach, the RG says Map LW. This only shows one route between Bridgend and Cardiff, rather than being clear by showing both. However, it doesn't specify what route that is. So it just says Swansea-Bridgend-Cardiff is valid. The Vale route involves Swansea-Bridgend-Cardiff and therefore does not contradict the mapped route. Therefore the ticket is valid. For a comparison, only one route is shown to Pontypridd, but it would be ridiculous to say a ticket is not valid via both Cathays and Ninian Park. Who's to say what the one 'main' route between two points is?

Conclusion: answer to original question is Yes.

Is this reasoning right...? (By whatever definition of right!)

Swansea - Cardiff is valid via the vale of glamorgan and Cardiff - Pontypridd is valid via Cathays or via the cityline
