Rail line into Bath closed as woman hit by train near Trowbridge
An investigation was launched today after a woman was hit by a train near Trowbridge.
All trains running from Westbury into Bath Spa Station were halted following the incident.
The tragedy happened near Trowbridge Station at around 11.30 this morning.
Officials at the scene declined to give an exact location but it is understood the woman was hit by a Great Western Train travelling between Great Malvern and Westbury.
British Transport Police said they were not treating the tragedy as suspicious.
At around 1.30pm First Great Western said services were returning to normal.
The company website said some trains could still be cancelled, delayed by up to 15 mins or revised at short notice. The disruption was due to continue until around 2pm today.
Services through the area heading towards Portsmouth and Weymouth seemed to be running normally.
A replacement bus service for passengers heading into Bath ran from Trowbridge, Westbury, Warminster and Frome.
Passengers travelling between Southampton Central and Bath Spa were advised to use First Great Western train services via Reading in both directions.
Cross Country services were taking passengers between Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton in both directions until further notice.
A British Transport Police (BTP▸ ) spokesman said: "BTP and Wiltshire Police officers attended the line near to Trowbridge station on Tuesday, 9 October after a report that a person had been struck by a train.
"Paramedics also attended and located the body of an as-yet-unidentified woman who was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The incident, which was reported to police at 11.33am, is currently being treated as non-suspicious.
"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the woman's identity and inform her family."
