From the Exeter Express & Echo:

Quote
Work to improve Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids into bright, accessible and secure stations has started. Nearly four million passengers are set to benefit from better journey experiences at both stations from the ^7m refurbishment.

It will provide passengers with better facilities including, new waiting shelters, toilets and real-time digital customer information system. Led by First Great Western and Network Rail, the major refurbishment programme is part of the National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP), which is backed by the Department for Transport.

Network Rail has also launched today a new redevelopment opportunity that could further improve the station area of Exeter St Davids. By unlocking the untapped potential of the railway assets outside the station, there are opportunities for developers to transform the land into a mixed-use development and an integrated transport hub.

At central, has the money been spent on barriers and smashing up the horrible plant pots between the tracks.... but not removing the remains?

They were demolished to make extra room, for track renewal next month.

Maintenance and repainting of canopies is the responsibility of Network Rail - FGW (First Great Western) are responsible for painting everything below canopy height. This leads to issues when FGW repaints a station, but NR» (Network Rail - home page) won't touch the canopies because work is not yet due. This happened at Oxford a few years ago - the canopies are still in dire need of a repaint.

As this package is NSIP funded (so is about improvements), it should not cover maintenance, so "probably not" is the answer. Unless, of course, a repaint is due or can be rescheduled to coincide with the work. That would make sense, wouldn't it?

It won't take long to relay the track through Central. I understand Tophsam Loop - River Clyst Bridge is going to be dealt with fairly soon too.

The upgraded facilities at EXC are now operational but not quite finished; passengers still have to use the old entrance but all the adjacent ticket desk facilities are now closed with service having been moved to the new hall. Both ticket machines have been relocated. I would imagine that the new (double-sliding door) entrance will be in use by the end of November. Does anybody know if there are any specific plans for the vacated space?
