Travelled on the 0651 EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains)-PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) last Wednesday and twice during the journey, firstly while passing Westbury and then again approaching Reading, there were 'BING,BONG - will the Train Manager please contact the driver' PA (Public Address (broadcast loudspeaker announcements) or Passenger Assist (railway staff providing physical assistance to passengers with mobility issues), depending on context) messages. First time I have experienced this is many years of travelling between Exeter & London. I assumed the train crew would be able to contact each other privately via Company cellphones.

Not while the driver is driving! Think about it!

The Traincrew can communicate using the Driver-Guard communication system and attracts attention by a series of buzzer codes (in the same way as the ready-to-start at the doors).

However if the T/Manager is not in a position to hear the buzzer (TGS or bunk room in buffet) then after a time delay the "bing bong" will come over the PA (Public Address (broadcast loudspeaker announcements) or Passenger Assist (railway staff providing physical assistance to passengers with mobility issues), depending on context).
