Was looking at fares from Swindon to Salisbury.

I had always assumed a Super Off Peak would be cheaper than an Off Peak.  However for the same trains I am being quoted ^26 for an Off Peak or ^35 for a Super Off Peak.  (Or as low as ^9 for advance singles).

Seems the names are more confusing than I thought.

They are - you have a choice of routes for the journey, either changing at Bath or travelling via Reading/Basingstoke. Travelling via Reading is somewhat more expensive - I haven't checked but I'm guessing that's a period return ticket, whereas the cheaper route via Bath may well be a day return.

But you're absolutely right, to the uninitiated seeing those results on a journey planner looks fairly ridiculous...

Swindon - Salisbury is an interesting one. Particularly in light of the woeful service via Melksham. I'm sure grahame will be along presently with his two penn'orth.  Wink Grin

Summary - Anytime Day Return - 25.90.  Purchase Swindon to Warminster and Warmister to Salisbury tickets. Must travel via Warminster on a train that calls there.  Anytime return ticket 31.00 via Bath, rises to 106.00 "any route".  The "via Bath" ticket is NOT valid on the direct trains from Swindon to Salisbury.

^26 off peak valid via bath only.  ^35 super off peak valid via Reading or Bath
