Vandalised Yate Railway Station shelters repaired

Shelters at Yate Railway Station have been repaired following a spate of vandalism.

First Great Western said vandals struck at the station, near Bristol, three times in September 2010.

Glass in the shelters, which costs ^500 to replace, was smashed on each occasion and the firm said it would not replace them any more.

But now First has decided to replace the glass with a metal mesh which is also used in bus stops in the town.

A spokesman for First said the firm had "taken time" to consult with local councillors and groups over the shelters.

He added that two had been repaired and a third would be fixed in due course.

Liberal Democrat town councillor Chris Willmore said he was pleased that commuters would have somewhere to wait.

"This is far harder to vandalise and people can still see in and out so it feels secure - so with luck our train users should get shelter for a long time."

CCTV to deter Yate station vandalism

Yate railway station Campaigners hope the CCTV will mean the return of ticket machines at the station

Eight security cameras are to be installed at Yate railway station following a spate of vandalism.

Last year, glass in shelters - costing ^500 per sheet - was damaged three times in a week and ticket machines removed after being smashed.

Liberal Democrat councillor Sue Walker, and chairwoman of the Friends of Yate Railway Station, welcomed the news.

"I hope the criminals will now think twice once the cameras are in place," Ms Walker said.

'Wet and cold'

"The station has been without a ticket machine for some time thanks to vandalism. First Great Western said they wouldn't replace it while there were no CCTV cameras on site. I hope once there are that they will think again. Yate rail users were left out in the wet and cold this winter because the shelters were damaged, which shows how a few mindless vandals can make waiting for a train a misery for everyone.

"I hope criminals will think twice when these cameras are in place," she added.
