A recovery train was being sent to the scene to remove the locomotive which suffered slight damage in the collision.

I'm not around to see the 05:15 Salisbury to Waterloo ... what stock exactly to SWT^▸ (South West Trains) use?   I thought the class 33s, 50s and 73s were long off to pastures new

It would be a 3 car 159 in all likelihood. Maybe a couple in multiple. So the recovery train will be removing a DMU^▸ (Diesel Multiple Unit) and not a locomotive as the story states.

"What the government should do is restrict the speed of trains just like they have motor vehicles.
I mean a train travelling at 100mph is difficult to pull up inside a mile, whereas you can stop a car inside 200 yards at that speed.

The black Fiat Bravo was travelling south when it appears to have gone out of control and hit a garden wall on the right-hand side of the road.

The car was thrown back across the carriageway, mounted the kerb and went over the embankment onto the track, where it was hit

If you look up the A338 at Broken Cross Bridge on an aerial view, and bear that description in mind, it's pretty clear that this is a total cockup by the driver. 

He'll probably try the 'sudden blow out' excuse, which appears a fairly common tactic when boy racers go over kerbs 'broadside on' as far as I can see...

I'm afraid you do get idiots who right stupid comments on news websites.

A common one is: "Let's tarmac over the railways and have express coaches.. blah blah".
