From FGW (First Great Western) live updates:

Quote
19:30 Cardiff Central to Portsmouth Harbour due 23:04
This train will be started from Newport South Wales. It will no longer call at: Cardiff Central. This train will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 3. This is due to a passenger having been taken ill earlier.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

Wild guess - someone died on Train 1 which consequently could not be moved for police reasons so Train 2 got roped in to fill the gap.

The incoming train ...

Full report: "This train will be terminated at Newport South Wales. It will no longer call at: Cardiff Central. This is due to a passenger having been taken ill earlier. Last Updated: 09/03/2010 18:16 "

So, yes, a stock switch to whatever happened to be available.
