Fake Christmas trees (see my post above) are not particularly popular, it seems.  From the BBC^» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

A ^14,000 fake Christmas tree which replaced a Dorset town centre's traditional fir tree due to health and safety concerns has been damaged.

The council believes parts of the 30ft (10m) cone in Poole, which is decorated with thousands of lights, were ripped off by vandals overnight on Monday. But it comes as strong winds have also battered the south coast.

Shoppers have said the controversial tree, funded by local businesses, looks more like a "witch's hat".

Borough of Poole said the damage is currently being looked at by the the tree's installation team.

Dorset Police said it believed several people could have climbed the tree and ripped off artificial layers. CCTV^▸ (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) footage was being assessed.

Fake Christmas tree to be removed

A fake Christmas tree which some residents in a Dorset town described as looking like a witch's hat is to be replaced after a vandal attack.

The ^14,000 30ft (10m) cone in Falkland Square in Poole was a replacement for the town centre's traditional fir tree.

Earier this week vandals ripped off the lights it had been decorated with.

Dolphin Shopping Centre has now donated a traditional 30ft (10m) Christmas tree. The cone, criticised heavily by shoppers, is to be replaced on Tuesday.

Dorset Police said it believed several people could have climbed the damaged tree - funded by businesses - and ripped off artificial layers. The force has been examining CCTV^▸ (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) footage.
