What I find particularly disappointing, readytostart, is that there were actually four other members of this forum on that stroll through the gardens - and not one of them tipped me off that grahame was taking that photo, behind my back! Shocked

They're called "railway cottages" and located close by a station that has grown in significance over the years

is 1 exeter? as for 4 i recognise that but not from train travel... north east somerset?

No ... number 1 turned out to be Taunton and number 4 is Lee on Solent ... scroll down and you'll find that there was a bit of a back-and-forth going on, but the answers are in there. Just No. 2 remaining which is this one:

Yes, it is Bedwyn. I'm not sure of the history of these houses but I'm fairly sure that they were put there by the old railway company for local staff; it's a while since I took the picture so the circumstances / things I saw that gave me this impression are a little fuzzy - they were certainly named "railway ... " something
