* Train Operating Companys (TOCs (Train Operating Company)) operate the trains
First Great Western - a part of the First Group

* Network Rail (NR» (Network Rail - home page)) provide the track and signalling and timetable coordination
Network Rail is a not for profit organisation in public ownership

* The Department for Transport  (DfT» (Department for Transport - about)) specify franchise arrangements to co-ordinate the arrangements

* Transport Authorities provide requirement and direction
In my area, that's Wiltshire County Council (WCC (Wiltshire County Council (Until March 2009))).

* ROSCOs» (Rolling Stock Owning Company - about) (Rolling Stock Companies) lease trains to the TOCs
e.g. Porterbrook, Angel Trains

This Section used to be called Who's who at FGW (First Great Western) but the scope has now been widened to include all the other organisations who form an integral part of the mesh.

I have added / extended this section at

http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=5343.0

and will be dropping the "sticky" off this thread - which now has some out of date elements - and it will quietly drop wasy over coming days and weeks.

Only obliquely relevant but I saw a green Bentley Continental - R in Marlow today, registration 1 FGW (First Great Western).

Anyone's here?

Not a clue ... It could just as easily be "Fred George Williams" as our local TOC (Train Operating Company) ... Google for "1 FGW Bentley" brings me the Bentley Train Simulator, Bentley in Hampshire, and John Bentley school in Calne.  Also some other research gems which were new links to me and it somehow found:

Do you have something you would like to add to this thread, or would you like to raise a new question at the Coffee Shop? Please [register] (it is free) if you have not done so before, or login (at the top of this page) if you already have an account - we would love to read what you have to say!

You can find out more about how this forum works [here] - that will link you to a copy of the forum agreement that you can read before you join, and tell you very much more about how we operate. We are an independent forum, provided and run by customers of Great Western Railway, for customers of Great Western Railway and we welcome railway professionals as members too, in either a personal or official capacity. Views expressed in posts are not necessarily the views of the operators of the forum.

As well as posting messages onto existing threads, and starting new subjects, members can communicate with each other through personal messages if they wish. And once members have made a certain number of posts, they will automatically be admitted to the "frequent posters club", where subjects not-for-public-domain are discussed; anything from the occasional rant to meetups we may be having ...
