Automated Announcements

Was at Temple Meads the other day waiting for a train an automated announcement came over the tannoy, which said something along the lines of:

"This is a safety annoucement, If you have luggage or a bicycle then please use the customer lifts and ask for assistance if you need it, Thank you"

Stating the bleeding obvious...! It's common sense, surely...

But then again, there are individuals that do lack common sense, myself included at times

Talking of announcements the one about luggage left unattended doesnt seem to be used very much anymore in south wales stations since the smoking ban came into being. Now they tend to play the "all of our trains are stations are no smoking areas" annoncement a lot.

I once had a rather embarrassing incident with unattended luggage. I was in the first class lounge and needed the toilet and I thought the toilets were on the other platform so I went to the other platform and forgot to take my suitcase... Opps... Big Opps actually. Then I was told there was one in the lounge... DOH!!!

You would think so, but there is one intellectually challenged gentleman who regularly rides his mountain bike down the stairs at Westbury station.  (And yes, the folly of his actions has been pointed out to him).

I think the problem with "sit up straight, pay attention, don't forget to wipe your @rse"-type safety announcements is that the people who actually listen to them aren't the people who are likely to need the advice... I doubt that an automated announcement would deter the kind of clown who rides his bike down the stairs! One thing that always irritates me about the station announcements in Wales (and also I think the ex-Wessex stations using the old Wales and West announcing system, but I'm open to correction) is that every announcement about an arriving train is suffixed by "when boarding the train, please mind the gap between the train and the platform edge".

Yep - get that in Cornwall.

We have a very innofensive female voice that used to tell us that Lympstone Commando was a request stop, I doubt anyone knew or cared  where that might be.
 
Devon was a bit of a shock when I started (recently) visiting by train - "THIS IS NEWTON ABBOT" the male voice boomed out, crikey !, "STAND BACK FROM THE PLATFORM EDGE THE NEXT SERVICE DOES NOT STOP"....fliipin eck.....1/2 a mile of wagons shoots through sucking all the air with it...

In Cornwall we don't get the 'not stopping' announcements and (mostly) after tea time no announcements at all.

Since the TOCs^▸ (Train Operating Company) had a shuffle and the routes changed a lot of the messages sound terrible too.

But let's hope when he does come a cropper he doesn't knock down and injure a third party.

Ive noticed that! Can be really irritating after a while and takes up a lot more time by the time they say it in Welsh as well.

Is Gloucester station ex Wessex? Ive noticed the same voice does the announcements there as in Wales.
