A member of my team was in complete shock when I explained that idea and ideal were two different words with two different meanings. She had gone 56 years believing they were interchangeable.

Yesterday (Sunday) I heard someone ask for "Guaval juice." Despite its notoriety, the terminal L is not that often heard IME▸ , but this was very distinct. The odd thing is it wasn't in Bristol! It was in Bath – close, but a different accent.

My late friend of Barrow Gurney - the village, not the institution - opined that the city's original name was Brist Ho!
... But that must have let the dust in.

Radio 4 reporting Graylings resigned.
Chris Grayling has returned to a part-time ports advisory job. Reported by the RMT▸ 's Mick Cash ... who's view is not very positive, but perhaps a bit biased.

Going by his time at Transport, I fear hearing news soon of Felixstowe silting up and Harwich being invaded by aliens.

"So that's Felixstowe in a nutshell, Mr G. Any questions before we move on to our corporate strategy for linear expansion in the ongoing post-Brexit situation?!
"Just one - that big metal floaty thing in the water, the one tied up to the stumpy bits sticking out of the concrete. Any idea what it is?"

Perhaps the "big floaty thing" is the spaceship containing the aliens whom have decided to invade Felixstowe instead of Harwich.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard. It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc. A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

It is very difficult to work out what he brings to the job to justify the reported ?100k per year for 7 hours a week.
Perhaps they will use him as a kind of negative sounding board. If someone in their organisation comes up with a new idea, they'll put it to him and if he reacts enthusiastically they will know they should drop it straight away?

I have, in hindsight, come across organisations which have felt the need to refactor what they do / provide for their stakeholders in a negative way, and they have appointed a heavyweight in the twighlight of his / her career who can take the knocks a bruises as they reduce the organisation, clearing the way for a newcomer at some point a year or two in the future who can rebuilt it - not as good as it was, but then everyone will think of it being good having been through the hatchet and wreckit phase. I just wonder.

Felixstowe may not have silted up but is reported to be "in chaos" with long delays to both ships and to trucks collecting containers for onward distribution. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54908129

That didn't take him long. The reported congestion is on the landward side, which can't match what the ships can land. So, according the BBC» news, next year they (Harwich Haven Authority) are going to ... dredge the port and its approaches so bigger ships ("super-sized container vessels") can get in. If you look at the world through jaundice-coloured spectacles*, that can only make things worse! Unless it only applies to Harwich port ... which isn't clear. (Who on earth could that be a reference to?)

Still no silting up of Felixstow, but there is now a threat of strike action. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-62332822That could have serious consequences for supplies and prices of imported foods and other essential goods.
