Its because 1A17 got stuck on Hemmerdon near Plymouth and was 90 late at Yeovil Jn messing up the whole WoE line

... not helped by a bridge strike near Yeovil Junction, either! From the FGW▸ website: Line incident Line problem in the Yeovil Junction area. Train services between Castle Cary and Exeter St Davids have been disrupted due to a vehicle striking a bridge earlier in the Yeovil Junction area. Delays of up to 20 minutes may still occur.

I was on that one. The delay was "only" 38 minutes out of Plymouth in the end (due to leaf-fall) - the real problem was caused by having to await a SWT▸ train coming into Exeter Central, which added a further half hour delay (and then, as mentioned above, there was the bridge strike near Chard Junction...)

More problems (and solutions), from the FGW▸ website: 12:50 Penzance to London Paddington due 19:17 This train will be terminated at Plymouth. It will no longer call at: Totnes, Newton Abbot, Exeter St Davids, Exeter Central, Castle Cary, Reading and London Paddington. This is due to a train fault. Replacement road transport will operate from Plymouth to Taunton.
16:00 Exeter St Davids to London Paddington due 19:17 An additional train service has been planned to operate as shown 16:00 Exeter St Davids to London Paddington due 19:17 run on 09/11/08.

Though in fairness the wait was probably a constraint of the single line route and the difficulty of timetabling the diversionary services.

yes the delay was due to the fact that the train in the opposite direction was late and would have been even later if it waited in the passing loop at chard for us, so we waited then made up the time big style! i was impressed yeovil to honiton in 24 mins
