Tewkesbury Borough Council has agreed in principle to work with neighbouring authorities on future housing plans. Members of the full council agreed that Tewkesbury should work with Cheltenham Borough and Gloucester City councils on a joint core strategy (link below.)

This would determine what kind of houses would be built, where they would go and when they would be built.

Tewkesbury councillors backed their planning officers' view that joint working would help the three councils meet their housing targets.

The Government's Regional Spatial Strategy calls for another 7,800 houses to be added to Gloucestershire, bringing the total for 2006-26 to 56,400.

Cheltenham urban area's total is proposed to be cut from 8,500 houses to 8,100 but Tewkesbury sees a hike from 10,500 to 14,600.

Developers are hoping to build 1,000 houses on the edge of Tewkesbury (link below.)

The land, which is in Wychavon district, will effectively become an extension of Tewkesbury town if it is built on.

The Severn & Avon Valley Combined Flood Group is dismayed that such a large estate could be built in Tewkesbury (link below.)

It has called for all new development to be stopped pending investigation into what caused the July flooding.

Cheltenham Borough Council wants to apply for a government grant to build more social housing. Its cabinet agreed to approve proposals for Cheltenham Borough Homes to write to the national Housing Corporation (link below.)

It would mark the first step in the council applying for part of a ^8 billion government pot to fund housebuilding from 2008 to 2011.
