More normally, a story from cruise ships but this one is a train.

A sustained gastro outbreak on the Indian Pacific train from Sydney to Perth has left more than 100 passengers sick, including two who had to be hospitalised.

Key points:

The first case of gastro was reported on September 10 and the last was on Wednesday
Great Southern Rail have responded by cleaning carriages more frequently
Operations have not been affected

SA Health Communicable Disease Control branch director Dr Louise Flood said the department had been working with Great Southern Rail "to try and control this outbreak".

Are we scrupulously clean in the UK (United Kingdom) so don't have the problem, or are journeys so short that anyone who picks anything up is long time off the train before they realise?

Firstly, most UK (United Kingdom) train journeys are too short for symptoms to become apparent whilst still on board.
And of course a lot of UK trains don't serve freshly prepared food. Sealed packets of nuts, crisps, biscuits, confectionery and the like are very low risk.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Mind you, there are those among us, who spend so much time in the few buffets that are left, that they probably have cast iron immunity from any buffet bug going!😀
