Tonight (17th July 2019) at STEAM Museum Swindon the nameplates for the Class 255 Castle HSTs▸ (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) were unveiled at a presentation by GWR▸ (Great Western Railway) for invited guests. The Class 43s remaining with GWR, for operation of the shortened sets on inter-regional services, are being named after castles/stately homes from across the area that GWR serves.

I believe there will be 24 named power cars on the fleet. 23 names have been decided upon, with one more to come.

Those names are:

Cromwell's Castle
Chûn Castle
Tregenna Castle
St Michael's Mount
St Mawes Castle
St Catherine's Castle
Castle-an-Dinas
Trematon Castle
Launceston Castle
Kingswear Castle
Compton Castle
Berry Pomeroy Castle
Okehampton Castle
Castle Drogo
Powderham Castle
Rougemont Castle
Taunton Castle
Dunster Castle
Walton Castle
Cardiff Castle
Caerphilly Castle
Newport Castle
Chepstow Castle

The individual allocation of a name to a 43xxx has yet to be confirmed. Although Laira do have all the nameplates ready to go.

Also unveiled at STEAM tonight were a selection of nameplates that have adorned Class 43s throughout their time on BR▸ (British Rail(ways))/GWT/FGW▸ (First Great Western)/GWR in the west.

I'll post some pictures of the nameplates from the Class 255 'Castles' later.

Invited guests received a booklet with details of the castles/stately homes that have leant their names to the GWR▸ (Great Western Railway) Class 255 fleet of HST▸ (High Speed Train (Inter City class 43 125 units)) power cars.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view...) I am old enough to remember seeing some of those names appearing on working locomotives many years ago.

But not Okehampton Castle of course - wrong railway... Wink

With the locomotive out of use for a long time at Carnforth, this is a legend Castle nameplate that I would like to see in use again:  Wink

I was only thinking of that the other day, for reasons I can't recall. My son, then about 13 so over 25 years ago (!), was chosen by his school to meet Roy's train at Temple Meads on that final tour he did, shortly before he died. Said son was interviewed by the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) West news.
