The objective is to submit a planning application this summer, with construction work then expected to begin in 2020. A station in eastern Cardiff is long overdue, so good news.  But I hope London trains don't call there, as it will slow the service down just as it is finally being speeded up back to 1970s times.  There will be enough other services calling to provide good connections for those travelling to London at Newport. I would imagine most users of the station will use it to commute to Cardiff or maybe Bristol.

I've long been aware paucity of railway stations serving the eastern side of Cardiff and this just has to be good news. Personally, I think the notion of a Cardiff Metro could benefit from an extra intermediate station between there and Cardiff Central.

One thing that puzzles me though. The article speaks of the "the proximity of the park and ride facility to the M4 motorway". Could this be stretching it a bit? A look at the map shows that the M4 is several kilometres away, even the A48M is a good couple of kilometres away at it's closest point to the railway line.

The A48(M) will be no use at all, as it only provides access to/from the M4 heading in the wrong direction.  Although traffic could come off the M4 at J30 and then head down via the A48 and local roads. That could be attractive for people in north Cardiff or the valleys heading east, although many already have rail services of course.  How busy those roads are in the rush hour I don't know though. I would guess less busy than getting to Cardiff Central though, and the parking will probably be cheaper.
