A LONG-AWAITED train service which connects Barrow to Millom has made its first journey in 40 years, to the delight of many South Cumbrian residents.
Key figures from across the community welcomed the arrival of the service with a special reception at Millom's Discovery Centre after it rolled in to the station just after 9.30am yesterday (Sun).
The momentous journey marks the launch of a new Northern timetable which will see trains running more frequently during the week and stopping at stations such as Askam, Kirkby and Ravenglass.
A later time slot for the last train from Barrow to Millom has also come into effect on Mondays to Saturdays, leaving at 10.11pm - 41 minutes later than before.
The last train to Melksham leaves Swindon at 20:08 (Monday to Friday), 21:06 (Saturday) and 19:55 (Sunday) and leaves Westbury at 19:32 (Monday to Friday), 18:32 (Saturday) and 19:41 (Sunday).
Please may we have a later train at 20:55 from Westbury, returning at 22:26, from Swindon for 2019? After all, Melksham is 3 times the size of Millom, and there's plenty of data to suggest demand for such a service. No extra rolling stock needed as several units have been put to sleep for the night by that time. Extending the 19:07 Romsey to Salisbury, with the 17:41 Cheltenham Spa to Southampton picking up the rest of the Romsey diagram at Salisbury would do it ... or if you can't stomach the idea of through running, there's plenty of time to swap passengers between the trains at Salisbury.
