Say you work in London and want to get back to see your family in Wiltshire for the weekend. The nearest stations to your home are Tisbury, on a South West Trains line, 104 miles from the capital, and Westbury, with First Great Western, 105 miles away. Your cheapest standard class walk-up fare options, leaving on Friday evening and returning on Sunday, are:

London Waterloo to Tisbury
^39.50

London Paddington to Westbury
^133.00

Over three times the price to go one extra mile, because of FGW (First Great Western)'s evening peak restrictions. Even if you hang around for about three hours to qualify for a saver ticket, it's still going to cost you 22% more for a journey that is just 1% longer.

This gets mentioned all the time, the outstanding savings that can be made from the Trowbridge area by going via Salisbury!

My conculsion,

South West Trains offer something like Value for Money,

First Great Western are related to Dick Turpin, Highway Robbery.

Only really because SWT (South West Trains) are competiting with FGW (First Great Western) so they are only going to win passengers with really cheap tickets.

The beauty of FGW is that many people book well in advance when going to London, hence it is very cheap!
