The Longest Day

Partly an excuse to post a picture - but I always find it hard to get into my head that the summer solstice means the days start to shorten and we haven't even had summer yet!
This was the view over the sea at Teignmouth shortly after 5am today as dawn broke.

The Longest day isn't till October!
Wednesday September 29th, Surely? And Friday May 1st is the shortest.

I think we all know that the phrase 'The Longest Day' generally refers to that day of the year when the time between sunrise and sunset is greatest.
bobm's thread title would have lost some impact if it had said
'The Longest Time Between Sunrise and Sunset'
.
Putting the clocks back and ending BST is an artificial human construct in mid latitudes on Earth. Little need for it the closer you are to the poles or the equator. Although some countries chose to have it despite their closeness to the poles or equator, mainly for geopolitical reasons.
Whatever reasons there are for daylight saving time across the globe doesn't change the fact that on the days it is implemented the celestial time, and the earth's daily rotation, isn't changed. That's beyond the power of us humans.

I took advantage of it still being slightly light and caught a picture of the "Up" Riviera at Redruth this evening. Normally would need me to travel further west to catch a picture of the "up"
As you can see it was bordering sufficient light, and this is with the "up" running earlier being a Sunday

Nice atmospheric photo.
Here's the same loco and the day coaches on the Saturday summer service from Exeter St Davids - spotted yesterday pulling away from Dawlish.
